Dari Alexander:
Anybody who’s bought a home knows that real estate agent fees and commissions, they can get pretty expensive.

Steve Lacy:
Yeah, it’s a lot of dough. So one company is replacing its agents with robots. Jodie Goldberg shows us how it works from East Northport.

Jodie Goldberg:
It’s the robot that some say is taking the real estate market by storm.

Eric Rothman:
Tell me about the roof.

REX Bot:
Roof was updated in 2004.

Jodie Goldberg:
Folks at REX Realty believed their bond will enhance showings and make selling homes less expensive.

Eric Rothman:
When you come into a house for a showing or for an open house, you can explore the house on your own.

There’s someone there to greet you, make sure security is safe for the seller, and then you can go as a buyer, look around, and then literally ask the robot questions that you want to know about the house.

Dari Alexander:
Eric Rothman said the robot named Rex has the answers to 75 questions. The California tech-based agency listed its first house in New York this month.

Eric Rothman:
Tell me about the neighborhood.

REX Bot:
Quiet neighborhood. Close to shopping. Restaurants nearby.

Jodie Goldberg:
The company charges a 2% fee instead of the typical 5-6% they say traditional agents usually charge. Chip Botjer wants to save money and is giving Rex a try.

Chip Botjer:
It gives the facts. It allows people to look at what interests them instead of just read a big piece of paper.

Jodie Goldberg:
And you can actually make an offer using the bot by entering your name and number.

Male Interviewee 1:
I think it’s a great idea.

Male Interviewee 2:
Like a virtual real estate agent.

Jodie Goldberg:
And while REX Realty says the robot will always be accompanied by a licensed agent to assist with the entire home buying process. Brokers like Joe Moshé are skeptical.

Joe Moshé:
The real estate agent in what many times is the largest transaction that the consumer is involved with is handled by a professional.

Jodie Goldberg:
REX plans to have 50 licensed agents in New York by the end of next year, and the bot will always be available for any showing.

Eric Rothman:
Is this house haunted?

REX Bot:
Not that we know of.

Eric Rothman:
In East Northport, Long Island, Jodie Goldberg. Fox 5 News.

Dari Alexander:
Yeah, like it’s going to tell you the truth if it’s haunted or not.

Steve Lacy:
Yeah, I know. It’s haunted by a robot.

Dari Alexander:
Yes, yes.
